What Witch Hunts Teach Us About Modern Femicide in Italy
Italy’s history of femicide goes back to at least the 14th century, when witch hunts were a way to execute women for being outspoken and standing up for themselves. Femicide in Italy is not a modern anomaly but the latest chapter in a centuries-long history of controlling and punishing women who defy patriarchal expectations. Legal reforms alone can’t end this violence because its roots are cultural, historical, and deeply gendered.
